Are Japanese cars really notorious for rust damage? What is your opinion?

One issue would with any rust problem would be the location of the car once it's left the factory, and how long it was there before it was imported.
Then it depends on the location of the car after import also.

Yes, location is a key issue. But i believe this is a problem with ANY car left without shelter and maintanance.
